Say Hello to My Little Friend!

December 31, 2018Tis the season for holiday cheer, and many folks are planning their annual family photos! If the photo shoot includes everyone in your family—including the furry and four-legged—remember that pets are arguably the most important family member to take into consideration. With the hustle and bustle of the holidays and the excitement that comes along with it, it’s easy to overlook key safety and comfort factors when taking your pet for a photo.
Since photo settings vary, you could be packing up the family for an indoor professional studio shoot or an outdoor impromptu iPhone session. No matter what the plan is for creating holiday memories, keep these do’s and don’ts in mind to help ensure a positive experience for everyone saying “Cheese!” this holiday season!
Do
- Make sure your pet is trained in basic obedience. If your pet has a strong command of sit, stay, come and heel, he or she will be well on their way to a positive photography experience. Be sure to take treats for positive enforcement as well.
- Try on any holiday attire prior to the shoot. If you’re considering a photo with Fido wearing a holiday cap or any type of seasonal attire, be sure to let them try it on beforehand to ensure they’re comfortable and everything fits well without posing a safety hazard (tripping, chewing, etc.).
- Scout the outdoor setting or call ahead to confirm pets are welcome at the photography studio. If going to an outdoor space be sure dogs are allowed and the area doesn’t pose any threats from vehicles, wildlife, or the elements. If visiting a professional studio, find a photographer that’s experienced photographing pets.
Don’t
- Take an aggressive or un-socialized dog to a public place. Even if your pet is trained and well-behaved in the home, some pets may struggle in a new or unfamiliar setting. If this is the case, consider family photos in the backyard or staging an in-home session near the Christmas tree or Menorah.
- Never force holiday outfits or poses on your pet. If your pet shows signs of anxiety or unhappiness while trying on outfits prior to the photo shoot, it’s best to skip the attire.
- Don’t risk the safety and happiness of your pet for the perfect photo. If the situation is feeling stressful overall and your dog is not responding to basic obedience commands, make the call to remove your pup. It may be worth trying again after a bit of time has passed depending on the situation, but never put your pet at risk to harm themselves or someone else due to stressful situations.
