Spook-tacular Tips For Pet Owners
October 6, 2014Why Short and Sweet Can’t Be Beat!
November 18, 2014A five-month-old Samoyed named Casper stole the hearts of trainers and successfully completed puppy training at It’s A Dog’s World K9 Academy in our VIP program.
Puppies present an irresistible charm. They’re full of life, love, and heartfelt doggy kisses. Welcoming a puppy into your home can be a magical moment, yet oftentimes, a perfect little pooch will turn up with some habits that need managing. Casper is a five-month-old Samoyed who packs love into everything he does, whether playing with his owner, Modern Family Star Ariel Winter, or collecting friends (both human and four-legged). While Ariel fell instantly in love with the spunky fluff ball, she also had concerns about his play biting, house breaking, and crate training.
It’s A Dog’s World K9 Academy owner, Karen Widaman, has over 8 years of experience training dogs and recommended Casper for 30-day VIP training. The process largely took place in Karen’s home, where she introduced Casper to her well-trained dogs and began shaping his habits. “When Casper came to me, I could immediately tell that he was a great dog,” Karen shares. “But he definitely needed coaching on his housebreaking, socialization and chewing. He was a quick learner. After hard work on his part, he was executing a perfect ‘sit’ and we reduced his play biting by telling him ‘no’ and introducing an appropriate chew toy. I loved seeing him bond with my dogs and grow into the well behaved, social pooch that we always knew he was.”
Samoyed’s are inherently good-natured, and given their history as sledding and herding dogs, they’re generally happy leaders. The challenging side of their traits lies in their tendency to pull on a leash (like sledding dogs do) and they’re prone to short attention spans. Karen approached these concerns with a positive mindset, confident that Casper could handle direction and understand commands. The 30-day training process addressed his leash and attention span issues, and Casper rose to overcome both of these challenges that are typical in his breed.
Overall, Casper was a happy, beautiful dog that needed a little encouragement in all the right places. His completion revealed improvement with his leash skills, crate training, and housebreaking, and most importantly, alleviated his play biting habit. On the day Ariel picked Casper up, she was able to observe Casper’s obedience commands in a live demo and was ecstatic about her new pup’s improvement. She loves the fact that she can now take Casper out on hikes and various other adventures, where he can meet new people and dogs alike. Karen notes that Casper was a joy to have in training, and looks forward to supplemental training sessions inside Ariel’s home that will ensure his positive habits endure.
“Casper was one of those puppies that you know has a good heart. It helped that he followed the lead of my dogs at home. With a little focus on his part, he was listening, walking on a leash, and enjoying his crate. Ariel and Casper are lucky to have each other.”
