Speak And Hush
September 15, 2012Teaching Your Dog “Place”
November 16, 2012Have you ever been at the beach or a park and watched a dog come bounding back to an owner after the owner only gave a simply whistle? Have you thought, “I want my dog to do that”! Well, its easy and here’s how you can have your dog come running to you with just the sound of a whistle.
Have your dog sit in front of you. Using a dog whistle from your local pet store, blow it once and give your dog a treat. Use a small, but tasty treat, one that your dog really loves. Do this several times and repeat several times during the day. Repeat this over several days. Gradually increase the distance between you and your dog. When beginning this training, start in different areas in the house and eventually move outside in a fenced area. Once your dog is coming well from long distances, add in distractions. If you notice your dog get a little distracted, give a blow on the whistle and see if he comes to you. By now, he should be coming. If not, go back to shorter distances without distractions and take the steps a bit slower. You too will have your dog doing that amazing come command at the park in no time!
